How to get rid of a mattress in Charlotte

Book the mattress and box spring as a set and it is $143. Booked as two separate items a queen and a box spring would be $103 + $92 = $195. The set price exists because they come out of the room together.

Why the mattress is the hard one

A mattress is not heavy. It is floppy, oversized, and impossible to steer, and Charlotte's housing stock is unusually good at making that worse.

There are hardly any basements in this region. The Piedmont's red clay pushed builders toward slab and crawlspace foundations, so bedrooms went upstairs and stayed there. That means nearly every mattress in Charlotte has to come down something:

• The narrow stair with a turn at the top in a 1920s bungalow in Dilworth, Elizabeth, Wilmore or NoDa.
• The single stair up to the bonus room over the garage in Highland Creek, Steele Creek, Waxhaw or Indian Trail, where the guest bed has been since the house was new.
• The shared elevator in a five-over-one along the Rail Trail in South End, which is small, busy, and needs pads hung before anything bulky goes in it.

None of those add to the price. Carry-down from any floor is included.

What not to do with it

Do not leave it at the curb and hope. Charlotte's curbside bulky program runs on its own schedule and its own qualifying list — check the city's current page before you plan around it — and it does not serve apartment or condo buildings that use private hauling. If you are in an HOA neighborhood in Ballantyne or Blakeney, a mattress visible from the street over a weekend is a covenant letter waiting to happen.

Do not let it sit outside overnight. Charlotte humidity plus an afternoon thunderstorm turns a mattress into a sponge. A wet mattress weighs a great deal more, cannot be recycled the same way, and nobody will take it off your hands for free.

Do not count on donating it. Most Charlotte donation sites will not accept used mattresses at all, and the ones that do have narrow condition rules. Call before you load it into a car.

When those roll over, the old bed does not travel to the next place.

Book the pickup for the day before your final walk-through, not the day of. Property managers in Charlotte's larger complexes reserve the dock and the freight elevator by appointment, and the last week of a month is when everyone wants both.
