North Carolina’s Landfill Bans, in Plain Terms
State law — G.S. 130A-309.10(f) — lists what North Carolina landfills can’t accept. Several are things people try to throw out every week.
Televisions
Discarded TVs are banned outright, whatever their size or age.
Computer Equipment
Towers, laptops, monitors and similar gear have to be recycled rather than buried.
White Goods and Tires
Refrigerators, washers and other large appliances are banned, and so are whole scrap tires and lead-acid batteries.
Lithium-Ion Batteries
Starting December 1, 2026, lithium-ion batteries join the list — e-bike packs, scooter batteries, power-tool batteries.
Pineville’s scheduled bulky pickup, for example, specifically excludes televisions and computers. When we collect electronics, they go to recyclers that recover the metals, glass and circuit boards.
