The short answer
Every move produces a pile that is not going to the new place. In Charlotte it is usually the garage contents, the bonus-room furniture, the guest bed and whatever was in the crawlspace.
Price it either way and pay the lower one:
- Itemized — sofa $126, mattress and box spring set $143, dresser $126, treadmill $115, and so on.
- By truck fraction — quarter $241, three-eighths $338, half $431, five-eighths $513, three-quarters $587, seven-eighths $661, full $732.
Minimum per visit is $75.
Charlotte moves in two directions at once
This metro takes in new residents constantly and shuffles the existing ones around almost as much. Both flows create the same cleanout.
People arriving. Relocations into Charlotte's banking, fintech and corporate offices land people in a South End, Uptown or University City apartment on a twelve-month lease. When that lease ends and the household moves to a house in Matthews, Huntersville or Fort Mill, the apartment furniture does not come along. It was bought to fill a rental.
People moving up and out. The classic Charlotte move is inner neighborhood to outer subdivision: a Plaza Midwood or Dilworth bungalow traded for a new build in Waxhaw or Indian Trail. That move produces a specific kind of leftover, because bungalow-scale furniture does not work in a house with a bonus room and a two-story foyer.
Both end in the same place — a pile in the driveway with three days left on the lease or the closing.
What movers will not load
Even a full-service Charlotte moving company will decline a fairly predictable list:
- Anything with fuel in it — mowers, trimmers, the pressure washer, gas cans.
- Paint, solvents, pool chemicals. These need a household hazardous waste drop-off; check the county's current guidance.
- Open containers of anything.
- Broken furniture, particleboard shelving that will not survive a second move, and anything visibly mildewed, which after a Charlotte summer in a crawlspace is more things than you expect.
- Propane tanks off the grill.
They will also decline to disassemble things they think will not reassemble, and then the thing does not travel.
A typical Charlotte move-out list, priced
Moving out of a two-bedroom in South End into a house in Fort Mill, leaving behind:
- Sofa — $126
- Mattress + box spring set — $143
- Bed frame — $68
- Bookcase, particleboard / flat-pack — $100
- Desk (standard) — $83
- Office chair — $61
- TV, 42 to 65 inch — $68
$126 + $143 + $68 + $100 + $83 + $61 + $68 = $649.
That load is roughly a half truck, so the truck price of $431 wins and that is the quote. Itemizing stops being the cheaper route somewhere around six items, which is why we price both ways automatically.
Sequence it around the building, not around the movers
If either end of the move is a tower in Uptown, South End or along the Blue Line, the building controls the calendar. Those properties reserve the dock and the freight elevator by appointment, require elevator pads, and want a certificate of insurance naming the property before any crew works in the building.
Move-out weeks are the worst weeks to ask for one of those windows, because Charlotte's lease churn is heavy and everyone wants the same two days at the end of the month.
What to do: book the junk removal for a weekday earlier in the final week, before the movers come, not after. An empty-ish apartment is faster to load and you are not standing in a hallway at 6pm on the 31st negotiating for an elevator.
We issue the COI and make the reservation as part of the booking. It does not change your price.
Leaving a house instead of an apartment
Different problem. The house version of a move-out cleanout is dominated by the three places Charlotte homes store things, since none of them have basements:
- The garage. The mower at $65, the grill at $71, the weight bench at $69, the shelving, the paint you cannot take.
- The bonus room over the garage. Whatever furniture went up there when you moved in and is now not worth carrying back down — although we will carry it down, at no extra charge.
- The crawlspace. Holiday decorations, offcuts of carpet, a dehumidifier. Red clay plus Carolina humidity means cardboard stored down there has usually lost the argument.
If you are selling, the cleanout goes before listing photos. Charlotte buyers look hard at garages, because they know it is the only real storage in the house.
Security deposits and final walk-throughs
The cheapest version of this job is the one that happens before the inspection, not after. Property managers in Charlotte's larger complexes will charge for removal of anything left in the unit, on the balcony, or in the assigned garage bay — and they will charge on their schedule and their number, not yours.
A quarter truck at $241 booked in advance is a known cost. A line item on a deposit statement is not.
Booking it
Describe the load or send photos. The full price appears before you book and does not change on the day. Carry-out from any floor is included — third-floor walk-up in a University City complex, bonus room over a Waxhaw garage, fifth floor on the Rail Trail, same price.
We cover the metro from Davidson and Cornelius through Uptown and SouthPark out to Mint Hill, Matthews, Steele Creek, Waxhaw, Indian Trail and across into Fort Mill and Rock Hill.
Frequently asked questions
How much does a move-out cleanout cost in Charlotte?
From $241 for a quarter truck to $732 for a full one, or itemized if it is only a few things. A typical leftover load from a one or two-bedroom is a quarter to a half truck.
When should I schedule it relative to the movers?
Before them, on a weekday earlier in your final week. Charlotte's end-of-month lease churn means dock and freight elevator windows in the larger buildings are gone first.
What will the movers refuse to take?
Anything with fuel in it, paint and chemicals, propane tanks, open containers, and furniture they judge will not survive the trip. Paint and chemicals need a household hazardous waste drop-off; the rest we take.
Do you handle the certificate of insurance my building wants?
Yes. Give us the building name and the wording the management office requires and we issue it before the truck is scheduled, at no extra cost.
Can you come after I have already handed back the keys?
Yes, if we have access through a leasing office, a lockbox or a building contact. We send photos when the unit is clear.
