How to get rid of a refrigerator in Charlotte

The short answer

All of those include getting the refrigerant recovered by a certified technician, which is required before the metal can be scrapped. It is not a surcharge and it is not a line on your quote.

The minimum per visit is $75; every unit above prices well past it.

Why free routes keep saying no

A refrigerator is the appliance people most often think they can get rid of for nothing, and then cannot. Three reasons, in order of how often they bite:

• Refrigerant. Sealed cooling system, certified recovery required. A scrap collector who will cheerfully take your old dryer will not touch the fridge next to it.
• Delivery-day timing. Retailer haul-away is real, but it is a same-visit service on a direct swap. The crew delivering the new unit takes the old one from the same slot, disconnected and clear, and then leaves. They will not come back next week and they will not walk out to the garage for a second one.
• Access. Free routes involve somebody else's convenience. Nobody is coming to get a fridge out of a Charlotte crawlspace, a carport storage room, or a second-floor apartment.

The Charlotte garage fridge

This is the defining version of this call in this city, and it exists for a structural reason.

There are almost no basements in the Piedmont. Red clay pushed the region to slab and crawlspace construction, so there was never a downstairs to put an overflow refrigerator in. It went to the garage or the carport instead, and in the established neighborhoods — Cotswold, Sedgefield, Starmount, Madison Park, Hickory Grove, the Albemarle Road ranches — nearly every house has one.

The typical unit is fifteen to twenty years old, still running, holding drinks and a bag of ice, and drawing power continuously through Carolina summers in an uninsulated garage, which is the least efficient place in the house to put a refrigerator.

It is $164 to remove. With a chest freezer beside it — also standard in these houses — it is $164 + $146 = $310.

Mini fridges and the University City cycle

A mini fridge is $115, and they come in waves. University City empties out every spring, and the dorm and first-apartment refrigerator is one of the things that does not travel — it goes to the curb, the corridor, or the dumpster corral, where the property removes it and charges it back.

They also accumulate in offices and bonus rooms. If you have one, put it in the same visit as anything else; on its own it is still well above the $75 minimum, but it is a waste of a visit.

Empty it and prep it

Short list, and it genuinely matters:

• Empty it completely. Including the freezer drawer and the door bins. A unit moved with food in it is a mess, and after a Charlotte summer power interruption it is a worse one.
• Defrost it if it has been off. Meltwater in the base runs out across the floor when it tilts.
• Unplug it. That is the only disconnection needed for a standard fridge.
• Water line. If it has an ice maker, shut the supply valve and disconnect the line, or have a plumber do it. We do not break plumbing connections.
• Take the shelves out if they are loose. Glass shelves shifting mid-carry are the main way a doorway gets damaged.

Measure the doorway in an older house

Worth doing in the 1920s and 30s bungalows and mill houses in Dilworth, Elizabeth, Plaza Midwood, Wilmore, NoDa and Sedgefield. Those kitchens were not designed around a modern wide-body unit, and the kitchen door, the back hall and the back steps are all narrower than current standard.

A French door refrigerator frequently leaves with the doors off, and sometimes by a different route than it came in. Say it is an older house when you book so the crew arrives planning for it. No surcharge for taking doors off, and none for a longer route out.

The same applies in reverse out in the newer subdivisions, where the fridge is easy but the second unit is at the back of a three-car garage behind everything else.

Apartments and towers

In the garden complexes around University City, Steele Creek and east Charlotte, the unit's appliances belong to the property — so this is usually a mini fridge, and it cannot go beside the dumpster corral. Bulk items sit outside the building's waste contract, the property removes them, and the resident is charged.

In the South End and Uptown towers, a refrigerator leaving a unit is a building event: reserved freight elevator, pads hung, and a certificate of insurance on file naming the property. We issue the COI and reserve the window as part of the booking, at no cost. The price for the fridge does not change.
