Paid Junk Removal

Charlotte City Bulky Pickup
vs Paid Junk Removal

The City's curbside bulky pickup is genuinely free — and genuinely slow, curbside-only, and full of catches. Paid junk removal costs money but comes same-day and carries the item out of the room for you. Here's the honest, specific comparison so you can pick the right one.

✓Licensed and insured
✓Same-day availability
✓Flat photo-quoted pricing
✓No hidden charges
✓No stair or walk-up fees
✓COI support
✓Donation and recycling

The two options, in one breath

City of Charlotte bulky pickup is free but appointment-based, with up to about a five-business-day wait; the item has to be at the curb by 6 AM, and you move it there yourself. JunkRabbit is a flat, photo-quoted price, usually same-day, and the crew carries the item out of the room — down a walk-up, out a tower's freight elevator, or straight from the garage. Free-but-you-do-the-work versus paid-and-we-do-everything. Which one wins depends entirely on your item, your building, and your timeline.

How the free city bulky pickup actually works

City of Charlotte Solid Waste Services runs curbside bulky collection for residents inside city limits, and the current program is on-demand by appointment — not the old fixed monthly rotation. The rules that trip people up:

  • You must schedule it first — an item set out without a confirmed request may not be collected. Book at 311 (704-336-7600) or servicerequest.charlottenc.gov.
  • Allow up to ~5 business days after you schedule for the truck to come.
  • At the curb by 6:00 AM on the scheduled day, no earlier than the day before.
  • Three feet of clearance from carts, mailboxes, cars and other obstacles.
  • 75 lb cap on single heavy items.
  • You get it to the curb — the city hauls from the curb, not from your living room, attic or third-floor apartment.

For a city-eligible item, at a single-family home, when you're not in a rush and can move it yourself, that's a fine deal — it's free. The trouble starts with what it won't take, and where there's no curb to use.

What the city won't take

The bulky program has a hard exclusion list, and it's long enough to strand a lot of real Charlotte jobs:

  • TVs & computers — banned from NC landfills since 2011; the city can't take them curbside at all.
  • Construction & demolition debris — drywall, flooring, cabinets, fixtures, remodel material.
  • HVAC & furnace units, propane and pressurized tanks, and hazardous waste.
  • Anything over the 75 lb single-item cap, or anything you can't physically get to the curb.

Every one of those is squarely in JunkRabbit's lane. We take the TV to a certified e-recycler, haul the remodel debris the city legally can't, and carry the heavy or awkward piece out of the house so the 75 lb cap and the curb never enter the picture.

The towns run their own programs

One Charlotte-specific wrinkle: if you're in Matthews, Mint Hill, Pineville, Huntersville, Cornelius or Davidson, you're not on City of Charlotte Solid Waste at all. Each is an incorporated town with its own waste program, so its bulky-pickup rules, limits and schedule are different — check your town's site or public-works line, not the city's. JunkRabbit covers all of the towns the same way we cover the city core: flat photo-quoted price, same-day when a slot's open, carried out of the home.

Queen mattress$103
Refrigerator$164
Large TV$73
Cleanout — 1/4 truck$241

So which should you use?

Use the free city pickup when the item is city-eligible, you're at a single-family home with a usable curb, you can move it out yourself, and a few days' wait is fine. It costs nothing — take the deal. Use JunkRabbit when you need it gone today, the item is a TV, remodel debris or an appliance the city won't take, you're in a South End or Uptown tower with no curb, you're in an HOA that won't allow a curb pile, or the piece is simply too heavy or awkward to wrestle out on your own. One's free and slow; the other's paid and done — the right call is whichever matches your job.

What Charlotte customers say

★★★★★

"I scheduled the city pickup and then realized it was days out and I had to lug a sleeper sofa down from my University City apartment first. Called JunkRabbit instead — flat price from a photo, carried it down the stairs same afternoon. Worth it."

— Priya S., University City
★★★★★

"Old projection TV the city flat-out won't take, plus a busted treadmill. They hauled both, recycled the TV, one flat number. The free program couldn't have touched either one."

— Greg H., Cotswold
★★★★★

"Our Ballantyne HOA won't let anything sit at the curb, so the city's five-day window was a non-starter. JunkRabbit loaded it straight from the garage, nothing on the curb, no tax on the bill. Easy."

— Michelle A., Ballantyne
